Crayon portrait of unidentified man

 Accession — item: ACC.2011.476
Identifier: ACC-2011-476

Content Description

A crayon portrait of an unidentified man, possibly from the greater Portland area, probably created circa 1860-1890; and a newspaper fragment formerly used in its frame as padding. Crayon portraiture was a photographic process used to enlarge photographs from about 1860 until the early 20th century. The portrait was formerly in the possession of a Forest Grove resident and may depict an early Forest Grove community member, similar in appearance to Sidney Harper Marsh. The portrait was removed from a ca. 1900 frame; the fragment of an unidentified national 1908 agriculture newspaper was using as padding within this frame.
