Content Description

Jean S. Burlingham (1925-2022) was a soprano opera singer active in the United States and Europe from the 1940s-1950s. The daughter of Mildred Copeland and Ernest Vernon Burlingham, and the granddaughter of Ernest Frederick ("E.F.") Burlingham, she was a member of a prominent family with many connections to Pacific University. Jean grew up in Forest Grove and then attended Mills College in Oakland, CA. In the 1950s, she sang with the San Francisco opera. Throughout her life, she traveled many times to Europe both as an opera student and as a visitor. This collection includes: approximately 20 LP recordings of Jean singing, dating from the 1940s-50s; 3 LPs of published music; a selection of published sheet music volumes dated circa 1900-1960 she collected in Europe and the United States; one folder of manuscript sheet music handwritten by Jean; and two small binders of circa 1920s handbooks on games and crafts.
