Content Description
Used by the Apache in Arizona to hold a child while traveling or while the mother was working. Made of wood, cloth, leather, and beads. Hood: 5 1/2" deep of reed. 9" wide. Top is made of cloth. 10 1/2" curved out from the hear board. Board Part: 20 slats laced to a foundation of wood. 9" at the narrowest part. 14 1/2" at the widest part. Handle: for carrying or fastening to mother's back. Curved and made of two pieces of wood. Leather straps for fastening the child attached to each side upright. Beads: 14 large, red, wooden beads on a black string. 13 large amber-colored beads with small black beads between. They are draped over the hood and will swing in the breeze. One long strip of cloth is laced across the child to hold him/her to the slatted part of the board securely.
