Biographical Note

Charles J. Bushnell was Pacific University's sixth president from the years of 1913-1918. Both he and his wife, Olga Bushnell, were educators before and after his presidency at Pacific. Before accepting his presidency at Pacific, Charles Bushnell was a professor of Sociology and Politics at Lawrence College. During his time at Pacific Bushnell pushed for a merger of colleges between Pacific University and Albany College, an ambitious attempt that eventually brought Presbyterian and Congregationalist tensions to the surface. Tualatin Academy closed for good in 1915, during Bushnell's time as President. He eventually resigned due to the failed merger attempt and by the time he left the university the following school year began with only two male students due in part to society moving toward a more urban centered environment and the first Wolrd War.
