Historical Note
Lu'au (which can also be written as Luau) is a tradition that the Hawaii Club, known as Na Haumana O Hawai'i (NHOH), brought to the Pacific University campus in the same academic year that the club was formed, 1959-1960. What began as a small celebration that was first done on the lawn behind Bates House on College Way has now become a symbol of the Hawaiian culture brought to the Mainland and is a huge, weekend celebration that is now a part of the Pacific culture. Lu'au has become a popular event that includes various dances, including fire dances where males throw an enflamed baton.
