Historical Note
Paul Falsetto was one of a team of architects working for the firm Fletcher Farr Ayotte PC (FFA), later known as FFA Architecture and Interiors, Inc.
In 2000, Pacific University employed FFA to recommend plans for updating the campus library in Forest Grove. The Harvey Scott Memorial Library building, which had opened in 1967, was in need of renovations to provide more space for collections, meeting and study spaces; as well as improvements to its electrical wiring, ADA compliance, a new elevator, heating and ventilation systems. FFA surveyed Scott Library and found that the building would require extensive work if it were to continue functioning as a library. Adding new compact book shelving would be too heavy for the structure, and would be unsafe in an earthquake. Therefore new space was needed.
In 2001, FFA proposed expanding Scott Library, extending its footprint westward towards College Way. After reviewing the proposal, however, Pacific University decided they would prefer to build a new facility for the library instead. In consultation with Pacific, FFA recommended constructing the new library on the east side of the main quadrangle in the center of campus.
At the time, Old College Hall, Pacific's oldest building (constructed 1850), was located in this space, having been moved there in the 1960s. That was not its first move; Old College Hall was originally located where Marsh Hall is today. FFA recommended that Old College Hall be moved again, this time to the southwestern corner of campus, where it could be more easily seen and accessed by the public. FFA and Pacific worked together to create a plan to move the historic building while keeping its designation on the National Register of Historic Places intact. The move was completed in 2003.
Meanwhile, FFA consulted with Pacific University to create plans for the new library. Construction finished in 2005. The new library was Pacific's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) compliant building. It would be given the name Tran Library in 2017.
