Content Description

Worn by a tribe on the northwest coast as a sign of wealth. Made of dentalium (a certain type of shell) that looks like a tooth. Necklace contains 41 dentalium with three or four little red beads, then a cream or a blue bead before the next dentalium. There are two strands with nearly an equal number of beads depending on the size, etc. Dentalium was also used as money.
