Content Description

Used by the Hupa in northern California. Found in Sauer's Bar at the fork of the Klamath River, in the area encompassing northern California and southern Oregon. Made of double woven and single woven reed materials and maidenhair fern. Has a light tan color with black double woven design around the outside. 4" high, 6 1/2" diameter. Briefly appraised by Stephanie Craig (Grand Ronde basket weaver), 11/2018: This is a woman's ceremonial cap which should only be handled by women. It should be stored oriented the same way that it would be worn, i.e. right-side-up. Made of sticks and roots; spokes are douglas fir; white is beargrass; black is maidenhair fern; brown is root.
