Siletz large brown basket

Content Description

Used by the Siletz in Oregon. Brown basket with triangular, tan design. 10" diameter, 6" high, with a handle over the top. Handwritten tag attached to basket notes: "W. C. Adams." Briefly appraised by Stephanie Craig (Grand Ronde basket weaver), 11/2018: Appears to be Tututni style or that of a nearby tribe in southern Oregon or northern California. Materials include roots and sticks, beargrass overlay, possibly a cattail handle. Handle has wire on the interior. This basket was made for trade as an egg-gathering style basket. Briefly appraised by Robert Kentta, Siletz Cultural Director, based on a photograph taken 11/2018: Miluk Coos style weaving; primary material is dark spruce or red cedar root; unusual rim braid pattern.
