Native American cedar bark basket
Accession
Identifier: MUS-214
Content Description
Thought to be used for collecting berries near Puget Sound in Washington. Based on the location, it may have been made by the Salish or another tribe in the area. Made of cedar bark with lacing on the side. 13" tube, approximately 6" in diameter. Believed to be an emergency basket "probably made in the woods." Briefly appraised by Stephanie Craig (Grand Ronde basket weaver), 11/2018: Folded bark basket. Agrees that this is a berry-gathering basket of a type that could be quickly made in the field. The indent at the bottom of the basket is made to fit against your hip.
