Content Description

Three letters in 1847 written by Dr. Marcus Whitman to Alanson Hinman. The first letter is dated October 30, 1847, from Waiilatpu and is signed: with esteem, yours truly, Marcus Whitman. The second letter is dated October 18, 1847. The third letter is dated November 8, 1847. Marcus Whitman (1802-1847) was one of the founders of the Whitman Mission in Waiilatpu near Walla Walla, Washington. He died during the Whitman Massacre along with his wife and eleven others on November 29, 1847. Alanson Hinman (1822-1908) came to Oregon in 1844 where he first spent time teaching at the Whitman Mission and others until finally settling in Forest Grove, Oregon where he became a trustee of Tualatin Academy in 1853 (later Pacific University). Until his death, he ran a general store in Forest Grove, Oregon.
