Content Description

A piece of Narcissa Whitman's braided hair, 1 1/4" diameter, 1/4" wide. Narcissa Whitman was one of the founders of the Whitman Mission in Waiilatpu near Walla Walla, Washington. She died during the Whitman Massacre along with her husband and eleven others on November 29, 1847. She had sent the hair to Alanson Hinman in a letter. Alanson Hinman (1822-1908) came to Oregon in 1844 where he first spent time teaching at the Whitman Mission during the winter of 1844. During the massacre in 1847, he was in charge of the Dalles station. Finally he settled in Forest Grove, Oregon where he became a trustee of Tualatin Academy in 1853 (later Pacific University). Until his death, he ran a general store in Forest Grove, Oregon.
