Chilkat blanket made and used by the Native American tribes in the Chilkat region in Alaska and British Columbia. Worn by high-ranking tribal members during ceremonies. Made of moutain goat wool and cedar bark pounded into the fringe. Blanket is in a frame, 77" by 45 1/2". These blankets were put on the graves of a chief or important owner of the blanket and left to disintegrate as a mark of esteem. The design represents the owner's face in the center and a whale diving on either side, a killer whale below and another kind of whale above. This blanket was originally purchased by Dr. Lucien Calvin Warner of New York City. Dr. Warner (1841-1925) was a physician and businessman in New York City who started the Warner Brothers Corset Manufacturers.
