Content Description
Mandarin square used to recognize the position of an official in imperial China. Apparently about 300 years old, possibly from the period of K'ang Hsi or Ch'ien Lung in the 18th century. Made of cloth embroidered with symbolic figures in mostly blues and tans. The color of the sun and the type of animal would change depending on the ranking of the officer wearing the square. In a wooden frame, 13" by 11 3/4". The back of the picture has the meaning.
