Picture of John Hughes, husband of Emma Pringle Hughes, daughter of Pherne Brown Pringle, daughter of Tabitha Brown, one of the founders of Tualatin Academy, later Pacific University, in Forest Grove, Oregon. Photo is in center of 12" by 9" paper. Spinning wheel used for making yarn out of wool. Made of wood and metal. 45" in diameter wheel. It was made by hand and worked by hand. It was brought west by a wagon over the Oregon Trail by the Clapp family from Northampton, Massachusetts in first half of the 19th century. The father's initials were C.F. and was the State Superintendent of Oregon from about 1889-1911, and on the Board of Trustees.
