Content Description

Portable lap desk from the Hawaiian Islands, made from native Hawaiian woods with brass decor and rims of brass. Writing pad with blue felt. Closed: 19 1/4" by 10 3/4". Open: 22 3/8" by 19 1/4". 7 1/2" high with handles on the ends for carrying. Two compartments for papers, 17 3/4" by 9 5/8" and 17 3/4" by 6" (with a lock). At the top there are compartments, three 2" by 2" by 2 1/4", one 2" by 2" by 7 5/8", and one drawer. There is a secret compartment behind a removable panel and three small drawers. Used in Forest Grove, Oregon. Belonged to Dr. William Geiger (1816-1901). Inside the secret compartment were 36 receipts from Geiger that are now stored in the Pacific University Archives.
