Greek metal cup and base copy
Content Description
Gold colored metal cup with a black base. Used for drinking in Greece. 3 1/4" at top, 2 5/8" tall. Relief design on the side. According to the old Pacific Museum records, "The relief design... represents the capture of a wild bull with a rope net, and a thrown off hunter who had climbed on the back of a captured bull in order to tame it, as was the habit in Thessaly at the time." Those records also state: "The design of the other cup represents the captured animals already tamed and used fr domestic purposes. The original cups are made of 24 carat gold and are the highlights of the National Museum in Athens, Greece. These replicas are smaller than the originals." It is likely referring to another Greek metal cup and base copy (MUS.932). The handle holds the seal from the University of Athens Museum to authenticate it as an exact copy of the one there.
