Content Description

Pillow from China in the early 19th century. Red with black stripes at each end. 11 1/2" long, 5 3/8" wide, 3 7/8" high. Cloth is stretched over wood pieces then layers of silk are applied and then covered in coats of lacquer. The front, back, and sides have pictures on them. On the front is a scene is a man on a donkey riding over a bridge over a river in the mountains with trees around, and they are going in the direction of a building. On the back is a scene of three men in robes talking in a circle on land near water while another man wearing a hat and carrying a walking-stick is approaching on a river boat. They are surrounded by mountains, trees, and grasses, and the sun is in the sky. On one of the sides is a bird sitting on a branch with flowers and leaves on it. The bird is looking up towards eight Chinese characters. The other side has a bird on a flower stem surrounded by flowers and stems, looking up at nine Chinese characters.
