Chinese folding screens
Content Description
Two 2-wing screens from China. Black framework. 45" tall, 16" wide. Red center panels are 21" by 11 1/2". Each panel portrays a theme in Chinese folk life and is painted in gold. Has a black foundation. Smaller panels on top contain another scene, while the small panels are the bottom picture flowers and birds. One screen shows the military commander Yey Fay during the ruling of Chin Ze. The picture is of Yey Fey's mother painting four characters of responsibility and loyalty on his back to remind him of his duty. The other screen shows an officer named Su Wu being exiled because the king believed an evil report of him. Su Wu was sent to the north to raise sheep and survive on minimal food for ten years to prove his innocence.
