Nez Perce large corn husk bag

 Accession
Identifier: MUS-77

Content Description

Used to carry belongings. Believed to have been either from the Nez Perce in Idaho or the tribes in southeastern Washington. Made of corn husks (dyed and natural), colored yarn, rawhide, green slime found on rocks, and red variegated clay. 18" long, 13 1/2" wide. Double handle pulled through an opening in both sides. The entire outer surface, except near the bottom, is covered with corn husk applied by false embroidery. By the technique, a strand of corn husk is wrapped around each weft, stitch by stitch, on the outside of the bag, the interior being unaffected by the process. On the corn husk surface are brightly colored geometric designs done more frequently with commercial wool threads. The designs are ordinarily distributed regularly over the surface. Each side has a different design.
