Content Description

An ornamental drawing on a wooden plaque (61mm by 142mm) possibly done by Samuel F.B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, who had a major influence on American art in the early nineteenth century. The scene takes place on the Bering Sea, near the Penny River in Alaska. It depicts Eskimos fishing through ice with blocks of ice built up around them to keep off the prevailing wind. There are four shelters, three dogs, a sled, and a man shown in the background. A coat of varnish covers the plaque. on the back of the plaque it says: "The Esquimaux fishing through the ice on Bering Sea near Penny River, Alaska." and "Compliments of F.B. Morse".
