Biographical / Historical Note

Jim Moore was a professor of Politics and Government at Pacific University. Around 2014, he began writing a biography of Oregon's Governor Vic Atiyeh, who served from 1979-1987. In order to write his book, Moore interviewed more than 70 Oregon politicians as well as friends and family of Atiyeh between 2014 and 2018. Moore's original manuscript titled "A lot Tougher Than You Made It Look: Oregon, Vic Atiyeh, and the Birth of a Modern Economy" was over 1000 pages in length. About half of the pages were cut from the manuscript and it was published as "Atiyeh: Governor Vic Atiyeh and the Transformation of Oregon" in 2025.
