Content Description

The Leabo Family of Oregon and California are descendants of Jacob Leabo (1795-1880). Jacob Leabo made his first trip to Oregon in 1847. He completed several other roundtrips between Oregon and his homes in Indiana and Iowa before permanently moving West in 1862. The Leabos settled in Forest Grove, Oregon, where several family members attended Pacific University. They intermarried with the Hinman Family, another prominent pioneer family in Forest Grove. In 1919, many members of the Leabo Family began moving to Monrovia, California, where they lived for much of the 20th century. This collection of papers includes: 1. Leabo Family history by Alonzo Reas Leabo handwritten in 1936-7, with later additions by other family members. This history includes short biographies of many family members, and describes their personalities, politics and major life events that they experienced, including travels on the Oregon Trail, the California Gold Rush of 1849, encounters with Native Americans while travelling by wagon train, attending school, working in various places in Forest Grove Oregon, and moving to Monrovia, California in 1919. -- 2. Approximately 50 family photographs dating from the 1860s-1980s (the earliest being copies; original photographs date from the 1880s and later). -- 3. Four letters regarding family history dating from the 1960s-1990s. -- 4. Newspaper clippings concerning the family. -- 5. Three funeral cards. -- 6. Expired driver's license of Lloyd Alanson Leabo.
