Laduska Walker Sears Diary
Scope and Contents
Laduska Walker Sears' diary and recipe book contains a short entry for nearly every day from January-August 1876, when she was about 19 years old. Most entries are 2-3 sentences long and most describe her daily housework as a young unmarried woman, living in her parents' home. She mentions her "duties" each day, including washing, cooking, ironing, sewing, gardening and scrubbing floors. She also mentions numerous visits with friends and family. After August, almost all of the diary entries are obscured by recipe clippings that were pasted on top of the pages. Several handwritten recipes are also present. See also the diaries by James Knox Sears, Laduska's husband, written several years after her death (MS.108).
